A five-yard gain has no single meaning. The down, the distance required and the position on the field help explain its value.

Start with the line to gain

A new first down gives the offence another series of opportunities. That is why a modest gain that reaches the line can matter more than a longer one that leaves the team short on its final attempt.

Compare two situations

Imagine the same short completion early in a series and later in a series with a long distance still required. The yardage is identical, but the remaining choices differ. This is a useful thought exercise when watching the scoreboard graphics.

Include the wider match

Time remaining and the score also influence decisions. Before calling a play too cautious or too aggressive, describe the problem the offence needed to solve. That habit makes both successful plays and unsuccessful ones easier to discuss.
